Serena was getting a divorce.
After just one year of marriage, her husband, whom she hadn't met, sent someone to talk to her about the divorce.
Owen, the assistant, sat across the table and pushed a document in front of Serena.
"Ms. Toland, please sign."
"Mr. Wheatley has promised to pay a five-million-dollar reward as soon as the marriage is terminated."
Serena was a little surprised to hear the figure of five million dollars.
She raised her brows to look at Owen. "Are you sure it's six million and not the final payment of 1.2 million?"
A year ago, Markus of the Wheatley family sent someone to find her and sign a contract with her.
The contract stipulated that she and Markus would marry and break the contract after one year. Markus would then pay her a fee of two million dollars.
She was short of money at the time and agreed to the deal without asking why.
She got a down payment of 600 hundred dollars.
On the day of the marriage license, she didn't show up. Markus sent someone to take her documents and apply for the marriage license.
Later, Markus sent someone to tell her that the marriage license would be kept by him.
It was just a transaction, and Serena was fine with it.
So for a year, she lived alone without any contact with Markus.
The only connection between the two was the marriage license.
"Of course." Owen said, "But, Ms. Toland, you need to agree to one condition in order to get the six million dollars."
Serena had just picked up the pen to sign when she stopped because of the words.
"What is the condition?"
She had a bad feeling.
Owen hid his lips and coughed lightly, trying to put it in a gentle way. "Ms. Toland, Mr. Wheatley would like you to move to a different place to live. It will be best if you never mention that you were married to Mr. Wheatley."
Serena was speechless.
"Mr. Wheatley also said that if you don't agree..."
Owen was interrupted before he could utter his threatening words.
Serena slapped the pen down heavily on the table and stood up.
"Go back and tell Markus that it's okay to get a divorce unless he comes to talk to me."
Owen was a little embarrassed and tried to persuade again when he saw the screen of Serena's cell phone on the desk light up.
Serena glanced at the caller and immediately answered the phone.
"Hello, Dr. Conrad."
Unlike her aggressive tone earlier, her tone was much gentler now.
Hearing the caller's words, Serena turned flustered, and her face turned pale for a moment.
"Okay, I'll come right now!"
Hanging up the phone, she grabbed her bag without saying a word and left.
Because she was so panicked, she didn't notice that a small book had fallen out of her bag.
"Ms..."
Owen wanted to remind her that she had left something behind, but he saw that she had already run out. He just had to keep the small book for now.
It was in the office on the top floor of Wheatley Group.
Markus looked at the photo in his phone and stroked the woman's cheek with his fingertips, his eyes tender.
"Lucille, you're finally back."
Just then, the phone rang.
Markus picked up the phone and moved it to his ear, asking, "How did it go?"
Owen said hesitantly, "Mr. Wheatley, Ms. Toland refused your request."
Markus narrowed his eyes and grimaced.
"The reason?"
"Ms. Toland won't accept the terms. She said it was okay to get a divorce, but asked you to talk to her personally." The assistant replied.
Markus rested his finger on the desk and tapped it.
The force was not strong, but it was harsh. It revealed his displeasure at the moment.
"How dare she!"
He gave her six million dollars. This was far more than the price that had been agreed upon.
"How dare she ask for anything else?"
"Mr. Wheatley, do you want to see her?" The assistant asked in a whisper.
"No." Markus said coldly, "Put the divorce on hold. Now arrange for someone to pick up Lucille from the airport."
Then, he hung up the phone.
Of course, he would not go to see Serena because there was no need to do so.
He had married her to fulfill his grandmother's wish before she died.
The marriage had lasted a year, which was his limit.
Markus lowered his eyes and took another look at the pretty figure in the phone. The coldness in his eyes was replaced by tenderness.
At eight o'clock that night, Serena showed up outside a high-end restaurant.
After waiting for several minutes, she finally waited for the person she wanted.
A limousine stopped in front of the restaurant, and Owen got out and opened the back seat door.
The moment Markus stepped out of the car, Serena quickly stepped forward.
"Ms. Toland?"
Owen froze for a moment at the sight of her, then blocked, only to be dodged by Serena.
"Mr. Wheatley," she said as she stepped in front of Markus, meeting his eyes without timidity.
"Serena?"
Markus had seen Serena's picture, so he recognized her with just a glance.
He then sized her up again.
Serena was wearing a white blouse, the hem of which was casually buttoned at the waist, exposing her flat waist.
She was wearing a pair of brown slacks with a high ponytail.
Although it was a very casual outfit, the word "stunner" still flashed through Markus' mind.
The breeze blew Serena's hair around her shoulders.
The lettering tattoo behind her ear was revealed.
Markus subconsciously frowned, as if he felt resentful of girls with tattoos.
"It's me." Serena lifted the bag on her shoulder and glanced at the woman in the car. "Mr. Wheatley, are you free?"
"If you need anything, you can contact Owen directly."
Markus didn't want to talk to her much.
Owen immediately stepped forward to separate her from Markus.
Markus gently assisted the person in the car out.
Lucille Brewster, who got out of the car, looked at Serena a few more times and asked the man next to her tentatively, "Markus, who is she?"
"Someone unrelated," Markus replied casually, and led Lucille into the restaurant.
Serena saw him leaving and spoke deliberately. "Mr. Wheatley, I came to talk to you about divor..."
Before she could finish her sentence, she felt a chill.
So she closed her mouth in time and looked at the warning gaze of Markus.
When Lucille heard Serena say "divor", her hand tightened around Markus.
Her expression was tense as she looked at Serena.
"What is this woman's relationship with Markus?"
Without waiting for Lucille to ask, Serena pushed Owen directly away and came in front of her and Markus.
"Mr. Wheatley, you have to think about it. To negotiate or not?"
"You're threatening me?"
Markus looked at her coldly, oppressively.
Serena glanced at Lucille again before looking at the man's face.
"Mr. Wheatley, you have the choice."
She sensed Markus' murderous intent.
Serena subconsciously swallowed, nervous.
But she held back stiffly at the thought of what she was looking for Markus to do.
"Speak in the car."
Markus gestured to Owen to look after Lucille and got into the car.
